After Misaki leveled up, Junichi signaled the group to take a break. The adrenaline from the successive fights was beginning to wear off, giving way to deep fatigue and the throbbing pain of the spectral wounds. They found refuge in a rocky alcove slightly off the main path, a precarious but welcome shelter.
The atmosphere was tense, but different than before. Fear was still present, but it was now mixed with cautious curiosity and a nascent understanding of the rules of this hell. Five of them now had a "css" and a "skill." It was both terrifying and... potentially useful.
“Alright.”Junichi began, sitting heavily against the rock wall.“Let’s take stock. Kenta is a Warrior, Goro a Padin, Haru a Thief, Renji an Assassin, and Misaki a Shaman. Is that right?”
Nods confirmed his words.
“It sounds... it sounds a lot like video game roles, doesn’t it?”Aiko interjected, her studious nature overcoming her fear.“Warrior and Padin for close combat, Goro seems more defensive, Kenta more offensive. Thief and Assassin for agility, stealth, maybe critical damage or fast attacks. And Shaman... that sounds like support, or maybe healing?”
“My skill, ‘Defensive Stance’, increases my defense.”Goro confirmed, tapping his shield.“But it slows me down. Makes sense for a... tank, I guess? Someone who takes the hits.”
“And mine, ‘Offensive Stance’, increases damage but lowers defense.”Kenta added.“Clearly made for hitting hard. A DPS, as they say in games.”There was a hint of restrained excitement in his voice, quickly tempered by the memory of his failure to activate it properly.
“‘Keen Perception’ for me.”Haru said.“I notice more things. Details, movements. Useful for spotting enemies or traps, I imagine.”
“And ‘Minor Stealth’ for Renji.”Aiko continued, looking at Renji.“That also seems reted to discretion, infiltration.”
Renji simply nodded, not wishing to eborate for now.Assassin... that implies more than just stealth. Precise attacks, maybe poisons ter? Better keep that to myself for now.
All eyes turned to Misaki.“Shaman... ‘Spiritual Soothing’.”She repeated softly.“It says it can calm... reduce fear or stress.”Her eyes fell on Daichi, who was sitting apart, still trembling, staring bnkly.“Maybe... maybe I can try? On Daichi?”
Hesitantly, but driven by a sincere desire to help, Misaki slowly approached Daichi. She reached a trembling hand towards him, concentrating on the words of her skill description.“Spiritual Soothing...”She murmured. A very faint glow emanated from her palm.
Daichi flinched violently at first, but as the glow gently touched him, his tremors surprisingly lessened. His haggard gaze seemed to focus slightly, the raw panic giving way to a more contained fear. He was still breathing rapidly, but the uncontrolble shaking had subsided.“I... I feel... a little... less...”He stammered, looking as surprised as the others.
A small, shy but hopeful smile appeared on Misaki's face.“Did... did it work? A little?”She looked at her hand in amazement. Being able to do something, however small, to alleviate the ambient terror was an unexpected comfort.
While Misaki stayed near Daichi, savoring this small success, the others continued their discussion.“So, we have roles emerging.”Junichi said.“Goro on defense, Kenta and Haru on offense, Renji for reconnaissance or surprise attacks, Misaki for support... What about the rest of us?”He indicated Aiko, Daichi, Yuki, and himself.“We’re still level 1. We also need to level up to discover our own csses and skills.”
“We have to keep hunting.”Kenta decred, already more impatient.“We need to reach level 5. The stronger we are, the better.”
“Careful, Kenta.”Junichi reminded him.“We hunt, yes, but smartly. We don’t know what else we might encounter.”
After a brief rest, they resumed the hunt. Bolstered by their previous experience and the emerging roles, they proved more effective. Haru spotted the monkeys, Goro intercepted them with his shield and Defensive Stance (which he now activated with more confidence, accepting the increased slowness in exchange for better resistance), Kenta and Haru struck at moments of vulnerability, while Renji sometimes used his Minor Stealth to approach discreetly and observe, or to finish off a weakened creature with a swift attack from his own improvised dagger (a sharpened stone shard).
The next fight went without major hitches, but at its conclusion, as the Spectral Monkey dissipated, something caught Haru's attention. Where the creature had vanished, a small object glowed faintly on the dead leaves. He picked it up carefully. It was a shard of polished bone, engraved with an unknown symbol, emitting a slight sensation of cold.“Look.”Haru said, showing it to the others.“It left this behind.”
Aiko approached, curious.“Loot? Like in games? Monsters drop items?”She examined the bone shard.“I don’t recognize this symbol. Maybe it’s a material... or something else?”
Monster loot... Another game rule confirmed.Renji thought. What could it be? A crafting component? Something useful? We'll need to pay attention after each fight. The discovery, though minor, added a new dimension to their hunt.
The following fight allowed Aiko to finally reach level 2.

“Mage!”Aiko excimed, a mixture of surprise and intellectual interest in her voice.“And ‘Guiding Light’... Finally some real light here!”She concentrated, and a small sphere of light, the size of a fist, appeared above her hand, casting a steady white glow far more effective than the phosphorescent moss. The light even seemed to push back the nearest shadows slightly.
Shortly after, it was Junichi's turn.

Junichi greeted the news with a thoughtful grunt.“Hunter... ‘Steady Aim’. Useful if we find ranged weapons. For now...”He shrugged, but his expression seemed a little less grim. Having a specialization, however rudimentary, was better than nothing.
The st to level up was Daichi, after a fight where, thanks to the lingering effect of Misaki's Spiritual Soothing and Goro's reassuring presence, he had managed not to scream and to stay retively close to the group without completely panicking.

Seeing the notification, Daichi turned even paler. He murmured in a strangled voice, barely audible:“N... Nervous Alchemist... Is... is this a joke? And... Basic Identification... Identify herbs? We’re going to die...”The very name of his css seemed a cruel mockery of his own terror. What good could it possibly be against spectral monsters and nightmarish bosses? He looked away, tears welling up again, convinced of his fundamental uselessness in this hostile world. His despair deepened, leaving him even more isoted in his fear.
Only Yuki remained at level 1, her expression still neutral and unreadable. The rest of the group, however, had reached a milestone. Eight out of nine members were now level 2, each with a css and an initial skill. They were beginning to resemble, very remotely, a real adventuring party, albeit broken, terrified, and poorly equipped. The road to level 5 was still long, but for the first time since arriving in this hell, a sembnce of structure and potential was emerging from the chaos. The hunt had to continue.
