“Put me down right now! I’m in a gown! The whole city is going to see my ass!”
“It’s nothing compared to the disgrace they’ve already seen! If we don’t hurry, we will be LATE!”
Students cheered Milliard on as they saw us sprinting through the school. Others sneered. “Ugh, it’s that weird pervert again.”. “Hopefully Milliard sends his ass to jail this time.”. “Lock him up and throw away the key!”
Once I finally wrestled free from his grasp, Milliard had the audacity to say. “Man it’s amazing how comfortable you are being naked in public! You would fit right in with those girls!”
“Milliard, I should kick your ass right now for…” I sighed. “Never mind. It is a little embarrassing, and being naked in public is certainly less than ideal, but I’m learning to be ok with who I am in that regard. I’ve spent a lot of time getting my body to where I wanted it to be, and even though I’m not there yet, I know I look good. Outside of it being indecent, and that I don’t like being called a pervert by you people, it’s not that big of a deal to me.”
Milliard gave me a thumbs up. “Same here! Although, I’ve never been as indecent as you are!”
“Most of this so-called ‘indecency’ is your fault! But forget it! Just tell me about the squad system and why it even matters in the first place before I get angry!”
“Sure! Students are placed in groups of 3 to 4 and given a mentor to aid in their studies. You stay in this group from your first year through graduation. Various factors like academic performance and battle prowess can earn asteries which improve your group’s rank. Groups are ranked from A to Z, with Alpha Aquad being the highest rank.”
“Why does that matter though? Is it just for resumes?”
“You could say that. Your squad rank does have a lot to do with earning a job after graduation, but most of that is determined by the strength of your Spirit Arts. If you graduate from this academy, you are almost guaranteed to get a job, so most people aren’t really concerned about that. Everyone aims to reach Alpha Squad by the end of their senior year because only Alpha Squad members are invited to attend the Tournament of Champions. The winner of the Tournament earns the right to take the Arch Exams, and if you pass you become an Archigos. We can have multiple Archigos per-nation but it’s virtually impossible because only one person can pass each year. Most people don’t pass the exam either.”

“I keep hearing people say Archigos but what exactly does that mean? Are you guys military generals or something?”
“No, not really. I don’t know much about organizing troops and such. Archigos are each tribe’s strongest warriors, and they serve as beacons of hope and safety for the nation. They are revered because you can’t pass the exam without having the highest levels of intellect and virtue. We’ve pretty much always been at peace as a nation, so most of us are just glorified celebrities at this point, which has its own perks as you just saw. Some Archigos are the de facto leaders of their tribe, but every tribe is formally run by their local branch of The Council. The National Council and the King have equal power in running the nation.”
“So let me get this straight. You won that tournament, and you passed the exam at 24 years old? Are the other Archigos that young too?”
“Nope! I’m the youngest Archigos in history! I won the tournament at 15 and passed the exam at 17! I’ve been serving as the Capital Archigos for 7 years now! Most of the other Archigos are well into their 30’s and 40’s!”
I grew a bit jealous because Milliard was the embodiment of what I wanted to become. If I hadn’t been screwed over for years by my sorry coaching staff, I could have been drafted and been a celebrity like him ages ago! Still though, I was happy for him because he was a genuine guy and earned everything he had.
“That’s awesome bro, congratulations. I guess in my world I was striving to become like an Archigos too. And I was so close…” I balled my fists. “When I get back, I’m gonna go extra hard and become someone people can look up to like you, Milliard!”
“That’s what I like to hear! Now let’s get changed so we can get you back to class. I think Marcus will be in there with you.”
After I showered and changed, we walked to my remedial class.
Milliard stopped outside the classroom. “Oh, I guess I should explain then. You and Marcus are the only students in remedial classes at this academy. Because Marcus is the only one who’s been sentenced to this kind of thing; we never took the time to establish a teacher, so they’ve left it to me as his squad leader.” Milliard buried his face in his hands. “I’ve been trying my hardest to teach him, but I’ve barely been able to keep him afloat…”
I can see why. He can’t tell a story to save his life and I’m sure he’s no better at teaching. He’s decent enough at explaining simple things like world concepts, but when it comes to areas he’s passionate about, he goes completely off the rails.
“I see…well maybe you could teach me this stuff and I could teach him. I’ve been wanting a chance to get to know him better anyway.”
“That’s perfect! That would give me even more time to work out! If he doesn't regress, you’re free to teach him yourself! I’ve got training to do!” He shouted as he sprinted away.
“But wait, you have to teach me first!”
I facepalmed as I entered the room.
