Chapter 109

  Forty-eight hours.

"That's it. It will be boring, but at least I have free time to keep training the basics."

He finally understood something he had once only observed when he watched the series.

During the Hunter Exam arc of Hunter × Hunter, after the isnd phase ended, Illumi Zoldyck had simply dug a burrow and waited once he secured what he needed.

For NEN users with enough power and composure, most exams were not tests.

They were just time they needed to spend waiting for others to finish.

Waiting for exams to finish, after they finished, was a simple test of their patience, but it was still important.

In the end, right now Conrad had nothing to do but train and wait for time to pass.

As a new user with four abilities, these small exams, if not considering who is taking the exams, are not dangerous and not that important at all.

Conrad shifted the cloth-wrapped eggs in his bag, ensuring they were stable.

"I do not want to steal eggs from these bugs again," he thought.

He didn't intend to move much after finding a suitable location.

With those thoughts, Conrad began moving deeper into the eastern section of the grassnds, skirting the edge of the Bck Mist Forest.

He wasn't worried about centipedes anymore.

Several hours passed as he navigated carefully, avoiding obvious pathways where desperate candidates might roam.

Not that he was scared of anybody; he just wanted to deal with nobody.

Eventually, he found what he was looking for.

  A small freshwater stream

Not obvious from a distance. Surrounded by uneven rocks and low trees.

  "Perfect."

"For the time being, I will stay here."

He crouched and tested the water first—clear, moving, no strange scent.

He filled the small bottle he carried with him, sealing it tightly.

"I need to find some small animal that I can eat," he murmured.

"Half a kilogram of meat would be enough."

"I am not here to have a vacation anyway."

With his EN and capability, it did not take too long for him to find a small animal that he could hunt and eat.

A small rabbit grazed near a fallen log.

Conrad did not hesitate to hunt.

His morality towards these kinds of hunts was nonexistent.

He can not just think about everything all the time. He was not a moral teacher or angel, so hunting for food was simple and okay for him to do.

He bent slightly, picked up a smooth pebble from the ground, and weighed it in his hand.

His physical power, enhanced subtly with Nen reinforcement, allowed even trivial objects to become lethal projectiles.

  He flicked his wrist.

  The pebble shot forward.

It moved at a speed several times faster than a standard bullet.

  The rabbit dropped instantly.

  Conrad approached and inspected it.

"My control of nen is improving," he commented.

He carried the rabbit back toward the freshwater area.

He chose a slightly elevated patch of ground near the stream but shielded by thick tree roots and rock formations.

  He cleaned the rabbit quickly.

He wasn't careless enough to create a signal fre for hungry applicants.

As the meat cooked, he extended his antenna intermittently, pulsing it outward like radar.

"So, it seems like nobody went too deep in the forest like me."

  "I am not that surprised."

"If I were them, I would be pnning how to steal or wait for people who stole bugs to ambush them in some way."

"Only people who want to not encounter anybody and trust themselves and their safety enter this deep into the forest."

He ate without indulgence, just enough to sustain himself.

The remaining meat he dried lightly over the small heat, preserving some for ter.

When finished, he extinguished every trace of fme, scattered the ash, and covered the soil.

Then he turned his attention inward.

He sat cross-legged beneath the tree roots.

He focused on refining the bance between his ten and the recovery cycle after teleportation use.

Earlier, rapid usage had halved his defense repeatedly.

He practiced micro-adjustments, tightening aura flow, redistributing output, and maintaining structural density without excessive drain.

This was not fshy training like creating a new ability and testing overwhelming nen power.

This was more of foundational work.

He wanted to train his basics to the end and have utmost control of nen ability.

He visualized combat scenarios and kept making decisions about it.

  Hours passed quietly.

He understood now why someone like Illumi chose to dig in and wait.

Conrad closed his eyes slightly, maintaining even in rest.
