11. SEVEN-DAY MARK

  CHAPTER 11 : SEVEN-DAY MARK

Rayan woke up to his alarm at 4:50 AM.

His body hurt. It was a deep, tired hurt in his muscles. It wasn't a sharp pain. It was just there, like a quiet reminder of everything he had done yesterday. He sat up and took a slow breath. The hurt was just information now. It told him he was working.

He looked at the blue screen in his mind.

  [Status Window]

  Time Until Exam: 12 Days

  Cognition Points (CP): 4

Twelve days. The number didn't scare him anymore. It was just a fact. He had a job to do for twelve more days.

He got out of bed and got ready.

  DAY 1 (12 Days Left → 11 Days Left)

The routine was simple. Cold water on his face. Sit at his desk. Open the books. Set a timer.

His mind didn't want to focus at first. He read the same line three times. A math problem looked confusing. But he didn't stop. He just kept looking at it. He didn't get up. He didn't check his phone. He just sat there, wearing down the confusion by not moving.

At school, things were quiet. He saw Selene in the hall. She gave him a small nod. He nodded back. They didn't talk. They didn't need to. They both knew they were fighting their own battles. It was better this way.

That night, he did his exercises. Push-ups, squats, planks. His arms shook. His legs burned. On the last push-up, his whole body trembled. But he finished it.

One point. Earned by not quitting when his body begged him to.

  DAY 2 (11 Days Left → 10 Days Left)

The tiredness was worse today. His hand cramped around his pen. His head felt tight, like a band was squeezing his forehead. Reading was harder. The words tried to swim away.

But he saw a small change. A physics concept that took him ten minutes yesterday only took seven today. It wasn't magic. It was just his brain getting used to the work. He was getting slightly better at being tired.

He held onto that small win.

  DAY 3 (10 Days Left → 9 Days Left)

This was the hard day. The doubt day.

A quiet voice in the back of his mind spoke up.

What if this is it? What if you're just a hard worker, not a smart one? What if you push this hard and still fail?

The voice was calm. It sounded reasonable.

Rayan didn't answer it. He didn't argue. He just picked up his pen and did the next problem. Then the next. He drowned the voice out with the sound of his own work.

  DAY 4 (9 Days Left → 8 Days Left)

He hit a wall. A real one.

It was 9 PM. He was studying chemistry. Suddenly, the letters on the page blurred together. He couldn't make sense of them. His eyes stung. His brain felt full, like a cup overflowing.

He wanted to scream. He wanted to throw the book.

Instead, he closed the book. Gently. He put his head in his hands. He sat in the dark and counted his breaths.

  One... two... three...

After ten breaths, he opened the book again. The letters were still there. They still didn't make sense. But he started reading them anyway, one word at a time, fighting for each one.

  DAY 5 (8 Days Left → 7 Days Left)

Nothing felt special. He was just tired. A deep, bone-tired that sleep didn't fix.

He went through the motions. School. Study. Exercise. His body moved, but he felt hollow inside. The excitement was gone. The fear was gone. All that was left was the work itself.

Seven days left. The finish line was close, but it felt very far away.

That night, after his final set of exercises, he sat on his bed. He was sweating. He was breathing hard. He looked at the floor.

"This is it," he said to the quiet room. "Five days of this. And for what?"

  The system screen glowed.

  Then, a new message appeared.

[Milestone Reached: Seven Days of Discipline]

  [Bonus for Consistency: +1 CP]

The number in his mind changed.

  [Total CP: 10]

  Ten points.

He stared at it. He hadn't been trying to get ten points. He was just trying not to fail today. But by not failing for seven days in a row, he had built this. A small pile of power, earned drop by drop.

A new option flashed on the screen.

  [PERMANENT UPGRADE AVAILABLE]

  [Cost: 10 CP]

[Effect: Choose one mental stat. Raise it to the human maximum.]

A permanent upgrade. Not a temporary boost. This would change him. For real.

  His stats appeared.

  Focus: 5/20

  Intelligence: 6/20

  Willpower: 11/20

  He thought about it.

Intelligence would make him smarter. But being smarter didn't put knowledge in his head. He'd still have to study every page. He'd just understand it faster.

Willpower was already his best stat. It was what got him out of bed. Making it stronger was good, but it wasn't his biggest problem.

Focus was his weakness. Focus was what stopped his mind from wandering. Focus was what made one hour of study worth one hour, not twenty minutes of study and forty minutes of daydreaming.

If he could focus completely, he could use every minute. He could learn twice as fast without getting any smarter. He could be present. He could stop wasting his own time.

  The choice was clear.

"Focus," he said out loud. "Upgrade my Focus."

  [Selection Confirmed: Focus]

  [Cost: 10 CP]

  [Upgrade Will Begin]

[WARNING: This will hurt. Your brain must change. You may pass out.]

"I don't care," Rayan said. "Do it."

The pain started in the middle of his forehead.

It wasn't like a headache. It was a pressure, like his brain was growing but his skull wasn't. It felt like his thoughts were being squeezed. Then it felt like they were being ripped apart and put back together.

He gasped and fell back on his bed. His hands grabbed the sheets. His eyes saw flashing lights. The room spun.

  [Upgrade in Progress...]

  Focus: 5 → 20

It was too much. He was being filled with a terrible, perfect clarity. He could feel his own mind reorganizing. It was the most frightening thing he had ever felt. He wasn't in control.

A soundless scream built in his chest.

  [Neural Overload Detected]

  [Emergency Shutdown Initiated]

  The world went black.

Not like sleep. Deeper. Like being turned off. No dreams. No thoughts. Just nothing.

On the bed, Rayan's body lay perfectly still. His chest rose and fell slowly.

Above him, the blue screen hovered, updating slowly.

  [Upgrading…]

  Focus: ████████▌ 68%

Time Until Entrance Exam: 7 Days

He was out cold. His mind was being rebuilt. And on the other side, when he woke up, nothing would be the same.
