It's that time again. Here is the update on the rewrite as it stands right now.
This past week? Progress. Sweet, sweet progress.
I have now fully rewritten, edited, proofread, and finalized the story all the way through Chapter 27.
Narratively, that brings us through the equivalent of Chapter 11 in the original version (the end of Max’s introduction) and also includes the content from Chapter 15, the Ironfang winter interlude. In total, I have now rewritten the material that originally spanned 13 chapters, including the prologue and Max’s introductory chapter.
That means the rewrite is now sitting at approximately 21.67% complete.
Finally being above that 20% mark honestly feels like a real milestone, especially considering how slowly and deliberately this process has been moving. Breaking that threshold feels like a significant step.
Now for the word count comparison, which I haven’t laid out in detail in a while:
Original word count (13 chapters): 37,525 words
Rewrite word count (27 chapters): 89,673 words
That’s an increase of 52,148 words, or roughly a 139% increase in total word count. In other words, this portion of the rewrite is about 2.39x longer than the original.
Of course, it’s also covering the same material across slightly more than double the number of chapters, so part of that growth comes from restructuring and pacing adjustments, not just pure expansion.
As for the chapter length consistency:
The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
20 chapters fall in the 3,000–4,500 word range
5 chapters are 2,500 words or below (ranging down to about 1,500 words), which include the Max/Party backstory/introduction interludes and one shorter structural chapter
2 chapters are around 5,000 words
Even the “meatier” 5,000-word chapters are not meant to be major deviations from the intended range. While 5,000 words is certainly substantial, it should still feel far more consistent than before, where one chapter might be 2,000 words and the next 6,000, followed by 8,000 or even 9,000-word chapters during Max’s original arc from Chapters 11 to 19.
With the consistency in word count, as well as far better editing (no more massive text blocks), the goal is for the reading experience to feel smoother and more predictable in terms of ease of reading, story pacing, and time commitment.
On that note, when I eventually relaunch the story, I plan to include an estimated read time in the pre-chapter author note for each chapter. That way, readers will have a clear idea of what kind of time commitment to expect before diving in to a new chapter. Just a small QOL thing I've decided to add.
The expansion itself comes from several deliberate changes, alot of which have already been covered previously.
Longer chapters were split to improve pacing and readability.
Grub’s rise within the Ironfang has been significantly expanded. The Medics are introduced much earlier (in the same chapter as the Builders), and a full trial-based mini-arc now allows Grub and the four slaves with him to actively prove their loyalty to Dravak and the tribe rather than having acceptance feel automatic.
Grub's ascent is still relatively quick, but it should now feel far more gradual and earned.
Plan for the Coming Week
This upcoming week, my plan is to reread all 27 rewritten chapters from start to finish.
After my two-week break due to the move, I jumped back in at Chapter 20 somewhat blindly. While the progress since then has been solid and felt consistent with previous chapters, I want to fully reintegrate myself into the flow of the story and double-check continuity between the early rewritten chapters and the current ones.
Because I’ll be doing this full reread and final pass, actual rewrite progress this coming week may be a bit lighter than this past week. That said, my goal is to have the rewrite fully completed, edited, proofread, and finalized through Chapter 30 by next Monday.
The next rewrite update will come on Monday, February 23rd. See ya then!
Momentum is building. Breaking 20% feels good.
Onward.
Thanks for reading!
