After escaping from Luna’s wrath and leaving Fir to fend for himself, I moved to where the crafter was.
Fir was most likely getting back at me for leaving him behind, but I felt Luna’s wrath was going to be much worse. Besides, that was his own fault! How the hell did he not recognize his younger ex-wife?
Aspen returned from her hunt, and she was staring in confusion with her head tilting from side to side to what the crafter was doing.
“Aspen!” I called out to her, “How did the hunt go?”
“Alice. It went well. We hunted a few muckrats and bats.” she pointed with her right paw, “what is that one doing?”
“I asked him to do something special… stay around, I came to check on him.”
The crafter was moving inside of the carcass. I could hear him, and would often grunt. Maybe he had not made any progress.
“What is he even doing there? He just seems to be goofing around.” Aspen said.
When we approached, the crafter stopped to make noises, and then…
“There!” he suddenly screamed, and a wind bde came out from the carcass and almost hit us!
It came on a vertical line from the middle of the carcass, and we dodged to the side in time to avoid it.
“What the hell?!” I yelled.
“Oi! What do you think you are doing?!” Aspen joined.
The carcass, incredibly so, was cut in half! And there he was, the crafter, looking at his work with a proud smile!
“Yes! I knew there was a weak spot! Now I just need to keep finding them and…” he saw us, while Aspen was growling at him, “what? What is it?”
He turned around to look behind himself, wondering about what had Aspen in a state of anger.
“What is it?! You almost cut us in half, you dumb tail!”
“Expin yourself! And how the hell did you manage to do that?!”
I got closer and the cut was clean. Inside of the carcass were several cuts around the internal membrane, which told me he had been trying to hack through it for a while.
“I did it! I managed to cut through the scales!” he said while wagging his tail.
“And you almost cut us!” Aspen yelled.
“Details. You two are fine.”
“D-details?!”
“Okay, so how did you do it?” I decided to intervene or we were not going anywhere at that rate.
“Simple!” he was excited again, “I managed to notice a few weak lines on the scales! They are too tightly held together, so they seem to be joined, but look!”
He pointed to one of the cuts, and it was deep and wide, allowing to see the scales on the surface. He made several cuts like that, exploratory in order to find different parts of the scales. He might have spent hours on that.
But he was right. Looking in detail, there is a point where they are divided, but they are pushed together too tightly.
“It took me a while to find where to also cut. There is a weird thing making segments of the scales stay together, which makes them extra hard. After seeing small parts where they connect, I had to adjust the weight and force of the air bdes.”
“Then you found the correct force?”
“The correct way to over do it!” he said excitedly, “I got so annoyed by not cutting through, so I just used all my magic!”
“Ah… well, then maybe next… you used all your magic?” I asked.
“Ah! You idiot!” Aspen yelled, “go drink water now!”
“Don’t worry! I’m fine! I just… can…”
He fell forward with his tongue out and butt up.
“Ah! W-water! Someone bring him water!”
“Agh! Why is he such a damn idiot! Bring water here now!”
Using big leaves from a pnt, some of the wolves brought him some water and made him drink it.
He hyper focused so hard he forgot to take care of himself.
[Analysing… he is a lost cause]
“Please, be more careful about your magic. I almost died because of that same problem.” I said.
“Y-yeah… I am aware, but when I start something, I kind of need to see it through…” he said while ying on the ground, still weak.
“Well… at least you got the job done, I guess.” I looked at the carcass.
To think that working on these things took him that much. With the correct tools maybe could be easier, and even more precise, but we did not have those options.
We had to let him rest to recover his magic. Differently from how I had to do it, where I had to sleep, he only needed to y low for a while and his reserves would slowly recover.
“And what are you pnning to do with this thing?” Aspen asked me.
“Well, if the king attacks us, we are not surviving thanks to our ck of numbers. So we need to get creative, especially since as far as I know, he cannot penetrate the scales of these things.”
“I still don’t get it.”
“Think about that cape Luna is always wearing. Imagine one like that, but covered in these scales.”
“Oh! I think I do! Then other wolves would have it hard to attack us, right?”
“Yup! You got it!”
“I figured as much,” crafter said, “making one should take a bit of work, but I already figured out how to cut these things. I just need to find the correct amount of force.”
He needed to find something else than just the right amount of force. Hopefully he didn’t end up killing himself by accident.
“Aspen, let me have a quick chat with him.” I asked her, for her confusion.
I expined something to him, which made him look at Aspen up and down. I saw her visibly shudder and take a step away.
“W-what?” she asked.
“Alright! I will have it done! Just give me time and I will get you what you want.” He said.
“Counting on you!” I answered. “Let’s go, Aspen!”
“Ugh… what the hell did you tell him?” she asked.
“Surprise!”
“I don’t do surprises!”
I had to decide what to do next. Maybe go check on the rest if anything needed to get sorted out, or to see if I can get a few more levels in. I kept hearing all those tales about the King, it was making me nervous that I could not defeat him if it came to be.
When we moved away from the carcasses. I noticed that, inside of one building, Fir was ying on the ground, like attempting to stay hidden.
What the hell happened to him? Was he still trying to run away from Luna?
We went in and he was under a bunch of stones that made it easier for him to hide… except for his tail, which was peeking behind him and giving his position away.
Aspen moved closer.
“Old tail! What are you doing?” she asked.
“IIIII!” I’M SORRY LUNA! I SWEAR I DID NOT KNOW IT WAS YOU!” he yelled, his tail straightened up.
“What the…? Damn, calm down!” Aspen said.
He went silent, and then slowly came out. Took a breath when he saw me, and lowered his. Head while sitting.
“Master Alice, you are too cruel! You left me with her, and Luna was so angry…”
“What? That was your fault for not recognizing your own ex wife!” how was that my fault? He was the idiot!
“You didn’t recognize her either!”
“Because I had never seen her younger! What is your excuse?”
“W-well… I was sure I had seen her before, but… she still has a bigger mane than when she was younger, and her smell even changed a bit.”
“Huh? Her smell really changed?"
“Yup! You didn’t notice our smells changed as well?” Aspen asked.
“No… I don’t have any way to sense smell, and even then humans don’t use smell to recognize people, so it is not something I would usually think about.”
“And why is she angry, anyway? What did you do” Aspen tilted her head.
“Eeehhh…” he hesitated to answer her question.
“He flirted with her.” I just outed him.
“Damn! You didn’t recognize your ex wife AND tried to seduce her? That is… rough.” Aspen was ughing while talking.
“Master Alice! Please! I have enough with Luna wanting to skin me alive!”
“Okay, okay… Aspen, leave him alone.”
“Sure…” she was still snickering.
“Fir, didn’t you have a message from me? You said something like that when… you know.”
“A message…? Oh! Right!” He cleared his throat. “Some of the scouts returned and informed me that they found a couple of lizards moving around the ke to the east. They are not causing trouble, but they can scare the animals around and might get closer.”
Probable trouble was not good news, but it was something I did want to hear! It meant more resources for our crafter! Which meant I could have more wolves armed to fight and be protected from the wolves of the King! And then came the meat and the XP!
“Aspen! Let’s go take care of them. Fir, I need you to build me another fridge, like the one I taught you with Ice!”
“Sure! I will have you one in no time!” Fir looked proud and ran out to do his job.
Fir brought me to the ke. It was way easier that time, with both of us evolved, and knowing how to kill them made the whole job go faster.
We learned something else. It made sense when you understood armors, though. Aspen got powerful enough to be able to completely unch herself, avoid the spikes and hit the lizards with her own body, pushing them, all without hurting herself.
Neither of us could penetrate the scales on their backs, but with enough blunt force they could be shaken and injured without the need to go through.
That also meant that our armour would be the same. Against heavily armored knights, you want to use hammers or the guard of your sword to hit hard and bend the metal. The energy of the attack should go through and hit the enemy.
In fantasy worlds like the one I was on, magic could be a good choice too.
But the main brass of the King’s forces were wolves without magic spells. We just had to be careful with the rest.
And who knows what the King was capable of doing.
So we had to work fast, because even when things seemed peaceful and calm, we had to get ready in case they were preparing an attack soon.
We killed the two lizards and brought back some more resources. Aspen and I leveled once.
And before I knew it, the first of the King’s attacks was going to come sooner than we all could have expected, as he was already brewing something for us.
