13 - Realisation

The Fae reached out his magic and checked the entire Tavern, down the smallest board and nail. Finally, he had full control of the entire building, the cleansing properties of all the iron had been overpowered by sheer quantity of magic.

  —--

Fully rested and food quickly eaten,

Today his progress home wouldn’t be beaten,

His breakfast he did barely taste,

To the library he went with haste,

He paid the clerk to enter and asked with care,

But all he got back was a perplexed stare,

The clerk showed him a map of this world,

With care the parchment was slowly unfurled,

Our Hero didn’t recognise a thing,

Uneasy realisation the knowledge did bring,

He wasn’t just in another country, far away,

He’d been on another world for more than a day,

He stared at the map while in a daze,

Until a thought broke through the haze,

There must be some mage around,

That could help his home be found,

The Mayor would know where to go,

To find the places they would show,

So back to the Mayor he briskly walked,

With the purpose of one that stalked,

Being on the list of those the Mayor knew,

Meant he was quickly shown through,

The smile he got when he walked in,

  Quickly transformed into something thin,

When our Hero said he here to ask,

Who on this world was up to the task,

Of making portals to other places,

  Populated by another worlds faces,

As he wasn’t actually from here,

And he’d like to get home and cheer,

Though the smile had all but disappeared,

It wasn’t as bad as the Mayor had feared,

The way to the nearest Academy was blocked,

By the portal from which Demons flocked,

So once again a request was given,

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

To see the Demons beaten and driven,

He accepted as it seemed the quickest way,

To get where he wanted to this day,

He was told that the task was already given to others,

An adventuring team known as The Lovers,

They left yesterday afternoon to scout,

A way to make the Demons rout,

The portal was on the road to the North,

From which nightly raids did come forth,

As large as the smallest house,

Surrounded in flames no water could douse,

The Mayor promised a letter of introduction,

To give the Academys procedure a reduction,

So our Hero left straight away,

Not wanting to extend his stay,

The road was straight and barely paved,

It seem like the road was rarely braved,

Only signs were of battles fought,

Attempts of reaching the portal which came to naught,

It wasn’t long before he saw a new scene,

Upon the Demons, someone's blade had been mean,

Arms left hanging and horns chopped,

This patrol had been swiftly dropped,

Soon he could hear the sounds of a fight,

Which made him grip his sword extra tight,

Arriving upon a most brutal clash,

An overhead swing of sword did smash,

Into the shield held by the tallest man he’d seen,

Supported by arrows from a lady in green,

The fight was tough that much was clear,

So our Hero rushed, not paying attention to his fear.

From a tree nearby a crow watched our Heros day,

Transmitting it all quite a long way,

From mind to mind, there was someone who saw it all,

Seated in a lavishly decorated hall,

With a wicked grin, they prepared to leave,

As there was a life they had to reave.

  —--

Following the wisps of Magic, the Ladies sight,

Came upon a scene that didn’t sit right,

A quarry filled with the finally dead,

A showing that would fill many with dread,

In the daylight a massive pyre,

Upon which the corpses would be cosigned to fire.
