Chapter 29: Gravity’s Law

  Chapter 29: Gravity’s Law

The air in Mandaue City had grown dense with tension, like a storm waiting to break. The guilds had reluctantly united under Adrian’s leadership after his victory over the Tiger King, but even now, there was no real sense of peace. The wave that had been building on the Wave Meter was finally reaching its apex. Adrian could feel it in his bones. It was coming.

The arena where the duel had taken place earlier was now empty, the blood of battle still lingering in the air. The remaining guild leaders had dispersed, returning to their quarters, each one contemplating their allegiance to Adrian’s cause. Some of them were still reluctant, but they knew they had no choice. The first wave would hit soon, and it would take everything they had to survive it.

Adrian stood at the front of the command center, looking over the holographic display of Mandaue, his fingers tracing the projected path of the Wave Meter. The numbers had crossed 90%, and it was only a matter of time before the System made its move. He could sense the impending chaos, and though they had secured their alliance with the guilds, he knew that the true test was yet to come.

“Is everyone ready?” Adrian asked, his voice calm but filled with urgency. He turned toward Sarah, who was busy calibrating the planetary shield. The other members of his team—Mike, Eva, and the others—were stationed at their posts, waiting for his command.

Sarah didn’t look up from her device, her fingers dancing over the interface with practiced ease. “The shield is at full capacity, but we’ll need a few more minutes to fine-tune the frequencies. Once the wave hits, it’s going to require every ounce of energy we have.”

Adrian nodded, his mind already racing ahead. “We don’t have a few more minutes. The Wave Meter is at 98%. We’ll have to make do with what we have.”

Mike, standing off to the side, cracked his knuckles. “We’ve got this, Adrian. I’m ready to hit whatever comes our way.”

Adrian turned to him, his gaze sharp. “This isn’t just about fighting, Mike. It’s about strategy. The System’s recalibration has been moving fast, but this wave—this will be the first true test. It won’t just be about brute strength. We’ll have to rely on our unity, our resonance. We need to work together, every single one of us.”

Eva, who had been silent, her face thoughtful, finally spoke. “The Tiger King may have been a nuisance, but there’s more to come. The System won’t stop just because we’ve secured a temporary victory. It will evolve, and we’ll have to evolve with it.”

Adrian nodded, his eyes narrowing. “Exactly. We’ll be facing more than just mindless drones this time. We’ll face the System’s true power.”

  ---

The ground trembled beneath their feet, a low hum reverberating through the command center. Adrian’s heart pounded in his chest as the Wave Meter reached its peak. He could feel the pressure building, and he knew that the first wave was about to hit. It would be their first real test since their victory over the Tiger King. He couldn’t afford to fail.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

“Everyone, take your positions,” Adrian said, his voice firm. “The time is now.”

The team scattered, each member moving to their assigned spots. Sarah began fine-tuning the planetary shield’s frequency, her fingers working rapidly. Mike moved to the front, his weapon in hand, ready for whatever might emerge from the sky. Eva stood near Adrian, her hands glowing faintly with radiant energy, ready to unleash her power at a moment’s notice.

Adrian focused on the horizon, his mind sharp and clear. The gravity around them was beginning to shift, a faint pull at the edges of his consciousness. It was subtle, but it was there. The System was adjusting the environment, altering the laws of physics to its advantage. But Adrian wasn’t going to let that happen.

With a single motion, he extended his hand, manipulating the gravity around the command center, creating a shield of force that would hold against the System’s influence. It wasn’t perfect—he could feel the strain on his body—but it would buy them the time they needed.

The holographic sky above flickered with energy as the Wave Meter hit 100%. Adrian’s heart skipped a beat as the world around them seemed to shift. The first wave was here.

A loud screech split the air. Thousands of dark shapes began to fall from the sky, raining down like a storm of predators. Typhon-Aswang Drones—massive, mutated creatures that looked like twisted versions of the original Aswangs, their bodies covered in chitin and bone—descended upon them, screeching and snarling as they plummeted from the clouds.

“Here they come,” Mike growled, his weapon raised. “Let’s give them a warm welcome.”

Adrian’s eyes locked onto the descending swarm. The first wave was unlike anything they had faced before. These weren’t just random mutations—they were organized, coordinated, and deadly.

The air around them crackled with energy as Sarah activated the planetary shield. The force field shimmered into existence, flickering briefly before solidifying. It would protect them from the brunt of the wave, but Adrian knew the shield wouldn’t hold indefinitely. They needed to take the fight to the enemy.

“Eva, take the left flank,” Adrian ordered, his voice filled with authority. “Mike, hold the front. Sarah, stay on the shield.”

Without another word, they moved into position. Adrian stepped forward, using his gravity manipulation to pull the Typhon-Aswang Drones from the sky, slamming them into the ground with crushing force. The creatures shrieked in pain as they were torn apart, but there were too many of them. They kept coming, swarming toward the shield like a tidal wave of flesh and bone.

Mike charged forward, his weapon swinging in brutal arcs as he cut through the oncoming waves of Aswangs. His strength was unmatched, but even he couldn’t take on hundreds of them at once. Eva unleashed a burst of radiant light, vaporizing a group of drones in one strike, but the swarm was endless. It was a battle of attrition.

Adrian gritted his teeth. “Focus on the leader! If we take it down, the rest will scatter.”

Through the chaos, Adrian’s eyes locked onto the largest creature in the swarm—the Typhon-Aswang Queen. She was massive, her body covered in twisted, jagged bone and dark chitin, her eyes glowing with a malevolent intelligence. She led the charge, her screeches sending waves of terror through the other drones.

Adrian raised his hand, using all of his strength to manipulate the gravity around the Queen. The force was immense, but the creature resisted, her body shifting and contorting as she fought against the pull.

“I need help!” Adrian shouted, his voice strained. “Eva, Mike, now!”

Eva stepped forward, her radiant energy surging through her hands as she focused on the Queen. Her light collided with the creature’s body, searing through its corrupted form. The Queen howled in pain, her wings flapping violently as she struggled against the combined force of Adrian’s gravity and Eva’s radiation.

Mike, charging forward, slammed his weapon into the Queen’s side, forcing her to the ground with an earth-shattering impact. The Queen let out one final screech before Adrian used his gravity manipulation to crush her under the weight of the collapsing tunnel above.

The swarm faltered for a moment, the remaining drones scattering in confusion. Adrian looked at his team, his chest heaving with exertion. They had survived the first wave—but at a cost.

“We hold,” Adrian said, his voice low. “But this is just the beginning.”

Sarah’s voice crackled through their comms. “The Wave Meter is still climbing. The worst is yet to come.”

Adrian nodded, his mind already calculating their next move. The battle had just begun, and the System wouldn’t stop until they were broken. But Adrian knew one thing for certain: they weren’t going down without a fight.
