21. Under A Full Moon

  Chapter 21 — Under a Full Moon

Silverpeak ended not with relief—but with revelation.

The forest thinned slowly, silver-barked sentinels giving way to twisted roots and then to nothing at all. Adam felt it before he saw it: the absence of resistance. The pressure that had followed every step for days loosened, like fingers reluctantly opening.

Alvin chirred softly from Adam’s shoulder, quills half-raised, eyes bright and alert.

“Yeah,” Adam murmured. “I feel it too.”

They stepped out of the trees together.

Barren ground stretched before them—gray stone and dead earth scoured clean of vegetation, forming a wide, exposed basin between forest and ruin. And beyond it, rising against the mountainside like a wound that never healed, stood the hold.

The keep was massive, even in decay.

Once, it had been white stone, cut clean and proud, its walls fitted so precisely they might have been grown rather than built. Now it was broken—sections collapsed, towers leaning at impossible angles, battlements split and sagging. The keep had been built into the mountain, its rear walls merging with sheer stone, while the forest encircled three-quarters of the surrounding land like a patient executioner.

To the far side, a cliff dropped away sharply.

Adam could hear the ocean below—distant, endless, the sound of waves smashing against rock far beneath the fog. Salt hung faintly in the air, mixing with rot and old magic.

Above it all hung the Full Moon.

Bloated and pale, its light washed the ruins in silver and sickly blue, casting shadows that moved when nothing else did. The moonlight slid across broken stone and skeletal remains alike, turning the ground between forest and keep into a killing field.

  Adam swallowed.

  “This is it,” he whispered.

  The ground answered.

Undead rose in waves—not hidden, not testing anymore. They came openly now, pulled from every shallow grave and shattered memory embedded in the soil. Skeletons in ancient armor. Desiccated corpses wrapped in rotting finery. Wraithlike shapes that dragged shadows behind them like cloaks.

Every race that had ever died here answered the call.

  Adam moved.

There was no finesse left—only momentum.

His fists struck like hammers, Boxing now instinctive beyond conscious thought. Holy enhancement wrapped his bones and knuckles, flaring brighter under the moon without drawing the forest’s ire. This was no longer Silverpeak’s domain.

  This was the lich’s.

Alvin launched from Adam’s shoulder in a blur of motion, holy energy threading along his razorback spines. He struck joints, sigils, binding points—each impact disrupting necromantic control rather than simply breaking bone. Where Alvin hit, undead failed.

  They adapted.

  Adam adapted faster.

Unarmed Combat (Boxing) increased → Lv.19

  Holy Enhancement increased → Lv.9

  Running increased → Lv.8

  He did not stop moving.

A ghoul’s claws raked his back. Adam didn’t turn—he drove forward, grabbed the creature by the head, and smashed it into the ground hard enough to crater stone. He felt ribs crack under his heel as he pivoted, then a cold bite as necrotic energy washed over his leg.

  Pain burned.

  He pushed through it.

  Pain Resistance increased → Lv.10

He healed only when necessary, Lay on Hands now fast and economical, sealing damage without thought. The ground grew slick beneath his boots with ash and bone dust.

  The keep loomed closer.

  So did the fear.

  Are they safe?

Did the drow move while I was gone?

  Did I wait too long?

Adam crushed a skeletal knight beneath a falling shield and snarled as he tore the thoughts away.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

  “Not now.”

The undead pressed harder near the gate—older, stronger, more carefully bound. These had been commanders once. Champions. Protectors twisted into sentinels.

Adam fought through them one brutal step at a time.

Lay on Hands increased → Lv.15

  Regeneration increased → Lv.5

When the last of them fell, the System chimed quietly—almost reverently.

  Level Up → Lv.24

Adam staggered forward and planted a hand against the massive stone doors of the keep.

  Silence fell.

Behind him lay a field of ruin—more than a thousand undead shattered, scattered, or dissolved back into the earth. Alvin climbed back to his shoulder, breathing fast but steady, holy glow now a constant presence beneath his quills.

  The System spoke again.

  Adam closed his eyes briefly.

“So that’s what it costs,” he whispered.

  Adam stared at the numbers.

Weeks ago, he would have called this impossible.

  Now?

  It felt barely enough.

He placed his palm flat against the ancient door. Cold stone thrummed beneath his touch—not dead, not alive.

  Waiting.

Alvin shifted, quills flaring gently, holy light answering whatever lurked beyond.

“Alright,” Adam said quietly. “I’m here.”

  He pushed.

  The door began to open.

And somewhere deep within the mountain-bound keep, something old and patient finally turned its full attention toward the man who had crossed Silverpeak and lived.
