CHAPTER 8

Luna spent the previous night, the entire morning and most of the evening going over her mother's medical journals, searching for any information recorded that might resemble Sofia's condition. However, all she found were common rashes that could be treated with topical ointments or severe conditions with terrible side effects, none of which seemed to match Sofia's case.

But try as she might, her mind kept wandering back to the conversation she had with Ezekiel some days ago. The determination she had the night before to visit the Magic Realm seemed like a distant dream now, overshadowed by doubts and uncertainties.

With a sigh, Luna pushed the journals aside and leaned back in her bed, running a hand through her hair in frustration. She couldn't shake the feeling that she had been too harsh with Ezekiel, that her anger had clouded her judgment and driven a wedge between them.

Closing her eyes, Luna retraced the conversation in her mind, searching for any rationality behind her words. But all she could recall was the heat of anger. He was the closest friend she had, and as soon as she got the chance, she knew she had to apologize and make it right.

Deciding she had grown tired of waiting for Ezekiel to return, Luna resolved to get ready and visit Sofia. She wanted to check on her condition's progress and see if she could identify any other side effects.

Rising from her bed, Luna stretched her limbs and made her way to the bathroom to freshen up before leaving the house. Even though Ezekiel had taught her a spell to clean herself magically, she preferred the simple pleasure of a bath. It was a chance to relax, unwind, and collect her thoughts.

So after a peaceful bath Luna emerged from the bathroom with a towel tightly wrapped around her, feeling the soothing warmth of the bathwater still clinging to her skin. She moved to her closet and began selecting her clothes for the day, occasionally glancing at her reflection in the mirror. As she dressed, Luna noticed the fatigue etched into her features—the slight shadows under her eyes, the pallor of her usually vibrant skin and the lack of muscle. She felt a twinge of self-consciousness, recognizing the toll her recent stresses and sleepless nights had taken on her appearance.

Braiding her hair, Luna thought it could make her look less sickly, but there was little she could do in such a short time to change her appearance. Satisfied with the image she had accomplished, Luna walked to the entrance and laced up her boots. Taking a quick glance across the house she took a large breath and left the cabin.

Luna walked through the fields toward Theo and Sofia's cottage, the warm sun casting a golden hue over the landscape. As she approached, she spotted Sofia playing near the grain fields, her laughter filling the air. Luna smiled at the sight, feeling a sense of peace wash over her.

Theo was busy tending to the crops, his sleeves rolled up. He looked up as Luna approached, his face lighting up with a bright smile. "Luna! Great to see you," he called out, waving her over.

"Hey, Theo," she replied, returning his smile. "How's everything going here?"

Theo shrugged, wiping sweat from his brow. "Not bad, just trying to keep these crops in shape. It's a lot of work."

Luna nodded, understanding the challenge before turning her attention to Sofia, who was running toward them with a wide grin. "Hi, Luna!" Sofia shouted, her eyes shining with excitement.

"Hey there, Sofia," Luna said, crouching down to Sofia's level. "You seem full of energy today!"

Sofia's hair was sprinkled with soil and bits of plants, and her clothes were smudged with dirt, but her radiant smile made her look even more joyful. "I'm having the best day ever!" she exclaimed.

Luna smiled, gently examining Sofia's neck, noticing the rash had spread a bit. To divert Sofia's attention, she started pulling some stray plants from the girl's hair. "I can see that. Did you find something cool?"

"Yes! I found some fun rocks for my collection!" Sofia chirped, her eyes gleaming with enthusiasm.

At her words, Theo glanced over, amused. "Sofi, no more rocks, okay? How about you come and help me before it gets dark?" he suggested with a playful tone.

Although Luna had come to check on Sofia's condition, she had nothing else pressing to do and decided to spend more time with them. Being around Sofia longer would give her a better sense of how the little girl was feeling.

Letting Sofia guide her, Luna joined Theo in the fields. Sofia eagerly explained the tasks, while Theo watched them both with a warm smile. Eventually, Sofia got distracted and wandered off, leaving Luna and Theo working side by side.

As they worked, Luna couldn't help but notice the way Theo's eyes sparkled in the sunlight and the warmth of his smile. She felt a flutter of excitement in her chest, drawn to his easy charm. "Hey, Theo..." Luna began, her voice soft as she looked up at him. "Thanks for letting me join in today. It's been really nice."

Theo grinned, meeting her gaze. "You're always welcome, Luna. It's nice to have good company out here."

Their eyes locked, and Luna felt her heart race at the intensity of the moment. She bit her lip nervously, unsure of what to say next. Theo leaned in slightly, his voice low and warm. "You know, Luna, I've been wanting to tell you..."

Before he could finish, Sofia burst back onto the scene, holding up a chunk of dry red clay. "I found a red rock!" she announced proudly.

Luna laughed at the interruption, feeling a mix of relief and amusement. "Wow, Sofia, that's beautiful!" she said, her smile mirroring Sofia's excitement. Leaning in, she whispered conspiratorially, "You better hide it before your dad decides to take it away."

With a mischievous grin, Sofia glanced at Theo and dashed off to hide her new treasure. Watching Sofia disappear, Luna felt a deep sense of contentment. The joy of being with Theo and Sofia, surrounded by nature, filled her with a peace she hadn't experienced in a long time. This must be what a family feels like, she thought.

Distracted by her thoughts, Luna barely noticed when Theo tapped her on the shoulder. "We should head back inside; I'm guessing you're staying for dinner?" he asked, his voice full of enthusiasm. It seemed the day had been good for him too.

Luna nodded and started heading toward the cabin with Theo. As they reached the back door of the cottage, they noticed it was slightly ajar, suggesting Sofia had already gone inside. They carried the baskets into the kitchen and set them on the counter. Just then, Sofia emerged from the bathroom, her hair damp and wearing a fresh white camisole, holding a hairbrush in her hand.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Seeing Luna, Sofia approached her with a hopeful look in her eyes. "Can you brush my hair, please?" she asked, extending the brush.

Luna smiled warmly and took the brush. "Of course, Sofia. Let's go sit on the sofa."

Sofia skipped ahead excitedly, leading the way to the sofa, while Luna followed. As they settled in, Theo announced, "I'll clean up, then we can start dinner," before heading toward the bathroom.

Luna nodded and began gently combing Sofia's blond hair, taking care not to pull too hard on any tangles. The simple act reminded her of her father, who used to comb her hair and hum a tune. Almost unconsciously, Luna started humming the same tune, feeling a sense of nostalgia and warmth.

The room was filled with a serene, comfortable silence. Sofia's presence, with her infectious joy and innocence, brought back happy memories for Luna. She felt a deep sense of peace, enjoying the quiet moment.

Just as Luna finished untangling Sofia's hair, Theo returned from his quick cleanup, dressed in a clean white shirt with his sleeves rolled up. "Ready to eat?" he called out, moving toward the kitchen to start preparing dinner.

Luna's stomach growled in response, and she nodded eagerly, her excitement mirrored in her smile. Noticing Luna's gaze following Theo, Sofia grinned mischievously and slipped away to her room, leaving Luna and Theo alone.

Feeling the need to contribute, Luna moved to join Theo in the kitchen. "Can I help with anything?" she asked, a bit shyly.

Theo chuckled, looking at her with a warm smile. "Sure, let's get started. You can help chop the vegetables."

Together, they worked on preparing a simple yet hearty meal. They chopped vegetables, cooked grains, and set a loaf of freshly baked bread to cool. The aroma of roasting vegetables filled the air, making the kitchen feel cozy and inviting.

"Sofia, the food's ready!" Theo called out, placing the dishes on the table. Luna quickly set an extra chair, eager to sit down and enjoy the meal with them.

As they gathered around the table, Sofia's eyes lit up at the sight of the spread. "It's like a feast!" she exclaimed, her excitement contagious.

Luna couldn't help but smile at Sofia's enthusiasm. It was heartwarming to see the little girl so happy, and she felt a surge of joy herself. They didn't always have such elaborate meals, but tonight felt special.

Theo even brought out a bottle of wine, pouring each of them a glass. Luna, usually cautious about drinking alcohol, accepted the glass with a grateful smile, touched by Theo's effort to make the evening special. He raised his glass, "To good food, good company, and good times."

Luna clinked her glass with his, her heart swelling with gratitude. "To good times," she echoed, smiling warmly.

Throughout dinner, Sofia chattered excitedly about her day, sharing stories about her rock collection and her adventures in the fields. Luna listened attentively, enjoying the lively conversation and the warmth of their shared meal. The cozy atmosphere made her feel more at home than she had in a long time.

As the meal came to an end, Sofia began to yawn, clearly tired from the day's excitement. "I think it's time for bed," Theo said gently, guiding her toward her room. Sofia gave Luna a quick hug before disappearing into her room with a sleepy smile.

Left alone in the living room, Luna felt a shift in the atmosphere, more aware of Theo's presence. The room felt quieter, more intimate, and she found herself searching for something to say. Before she could think of anything, Theo broke the silence.

"Do you want to go outside and look at the stars?" he asked, his voice soft and inviting.

Luna hesitated for a moment, caught off guard by the sudden invitation, but she quickly found herself nodding. "I'd like that," she said, a small smile playing on her lips.

Theo led her outside into the cool night air. The stars were brilliant overhead, scattered like glittering jewels across the dark sky. They walked a short distance in comfortable silence, the soft crunch of gravel underfoot the only sound.

In a clearing, Theo spread out a blanket and gestured for Luna to sit beside him. She hadn't noticed him bringing the blanket, but she appreciated the thoughtful gesture. They sat down together, their shoulders brushing lightly as they leaned back to gaze up at the stars.

For a while, they simply sat in silence, soaking in the beauty of the night. The air was filled with the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of crickets. Luna felt a sense of awe and wonder as she looked up at the vast expanse of the cosmos.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Theo's voice broke the silence, soft and thoughtful.

"Absolutely breathtaking," Luna whispered, her eyes still fixed on the stars. The serene beauty of the night sky felt almost magical, filling her with a deep sense of calm.

They sat quietly, lost in their own thoughts, until Theo turned to her, his expression earnest. "Luna," he began, his voice gentle. "There's something I've been wanting to tell you..."

Luna's heart raced, her mind struggling to catch up with the moment. She wasn't sure what to expect or how to feel. But before she could dwell on it, Theo reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair from her face, his touch light and tender.

"Luna," he repeated, his eyes searching hers. “I… I just wanted to say… even though we haven’t known each other for long, I’m grateful you’ve come into our lives. And… I’ve realized that I care about you. A lot.”

For a moment, Luna felt like the world had stopped. She wasn't sure what to say or do, her heart pounding in her chest. Theo leaned in, and before she could react, his lips were on hers, soft and warm. The kiss was gentle, tentative, and for a brief moment, Luna felt numb.

But as Theo pulled away, the numbness was replaced by a whirlwind of emotions—confusion, uncertainty, and a hint of something more. She wasn't ready to confront these feelings, wasn't sure what they meant or what she wanted.

As Luna pulled back, she saw Theo's expression change, mirroring her own confusion. "I need to go," she blurted out, standing up abruptly. Before Theo could respond, she turned and hurried away, leaving him sitting alone under the stars.

Luna's mind raced as she fled back to her cabin, her thoughts a tangled mess. She had always valued her independence and the freedom it brought, but now she felt a mix of emotions she couldn't easily sort through. She knew she had put herself in a vulnerable position by getting close to Theo and Sofia, and it scared her.

Back at her cabin, Luna paused at the door, trying to catch her breath. As she opened it, the warm glow of candlelight greeted her. Venus and Succulent were on the kitchen counter, Venus striking a dramatic pose while Succulent clapped enthusiastically. Their playful antics brought a smile to Luna's face, momentarily easing her turmoil.

She approached them, noticing Venus wearing a single earring with a small emerald. Succulent, always attentive, noticed Luna's entrance and walked over, prompting Venus to turn as well.

"What are you two up to?" Luna asked with a soft chuckle, her voice light despite her inner confusion.

Venus carefully untangled the earring from her vines and held it out to Luna. Accepting the earring, Luna examined the small gem, feeling a spark of inspiration.

“And what about the red pendant Venus, where did you put that?” she asked while looking over the small earring.

Venus shrugged in ignorance, a reaction that Luna found strange, but she let it go for now. With everything that had happened, Luna needed a distraction, and not one that involved searching through the mess in her home for the pendant Venus had stashed away.

At that moment, Luna needed to do something magical to clear her mind. Practicing infusion magic seemed like the perfect way to focus her thoughts leaving the kiss situation aside for the moment.

"Alright, let's get to work," she said, a determined note in her voice. "But first, we need to clean up. We don't want any impurities in this experiment."

Venus and Succulent quickly set to work, clearing the counter with enthusiasm. Once the area was spotless, Luna placed the earring on the counter and began her experiment. She tried casting a simple calming spell into the emerald, but nothing happened. Undeterred, she shifted her focus, analyzing the stone's magical properties and working to connect her own magic with it.

The process was challenging and required intense concentration. Hours passed as Luna painstakingly infused the emerald with her magic, her focus unwavering. Eventually, exhaustion overtook her, and she fell asleep on the kitchen counter, her dreams filled with shimmering lights and the soothing presence of her tiny helpers.
