CHAPTER 11 AMBUSH

The next morning, we got up, and I began practicing my earth magic. I could control it the same way as the other magics, with movement. Then I practiced staff-fighting and knife-fighting.

Then we packed our things and rested for the rest of the day, preparing for tomorrow's departure, but I did play another game with Prince Loam. He said, “Man, you are good against my Sicilian defence.” I asked how he knew the name of the opening? He said, “You aren't the first heroes to come here, chess is from your world, a past hero taught us,” which made sense.

Then came the time to leave. The fire kingdom was two days away from the earth kingdom. Prince Loam came personally to say goodbye and asked to play another game once my adventure was over, which I agreed to, while waving goodbye.

We walked for most of the day, occasionally stopping to defend ourselves from drakes and wyverns. Then night came, we caught up with some other heroes and decided to set up camp with them, then we ate and took turns guarding while the other slept. In the middle of the night, someone tried to attack us, but Sid quickly scared them away. Then morning came, and we continued walking.

About half a day later, some wind blades came flying at us. I blocked it with my own wind blade, and Sid cut threw the spell, then removed the buckler from her belt, and got in a fighting stance.

Then we saw our attackers; it was two heroes: one had a hatchet shaped a little like a hook, a buckler, and a knife, while the other had a two-handed sword and a knife, but there were no knights with them; maybe they were hiding in the woods waiting to ambush us. I asked, “Where are your knights?” The one with the hatchet scoffed and replied, “Those weeklings, they died a while ago to some drakes.” I hoped he was telling the truth.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

Then the one with the axe said, “You take the knight lady, I’ll go cut that stick of his in half.” Then they charged at us. I was against the one with the hatchet. I sent a jab at his face, and he dodged it, but then I brought my staff down, lightly hitting him on the back of his head, causing him to back off, then I said, “We don't need to fight, tell me, are you afraid that I will get the fame and forchins? I don't mind letting one of you have it; our job is just to save the world.” then he said “Shut up, I don't believe that for a minute, you have been getting high blessings from each dragon, you are definitely going to steel our chance if we don't finish you now”

Then the fight continued. He charged at me, and I sent another jab at his face, but again he dodged, and I then again brought my staff down, but he blocked with his buckler this time and swung his hatchet down at me. I took a step closer to him, and the handle hit me. What he didn't realize is that axes have a small hit box, but then he stepped back and pulled his hatchet towards him, causing it to hit me. It hurt, and as his axe was shaped a little like a hook, it seeped into my skin. My shoulder wasn't ruined, but I couldn't take many more of those. Then he smirked and said, “Once you are dead, we will kill the dark dragon and split the fame and riches between the two of us.”

I got into my stance, ignoring the pain in my shoulder, and this time I charged at him. I widely swung my staff to the right, where his axe was, as it has less defense than the buckler. He tried to block it with his hatchet's handle, but the blow was strong, and it looked like the blow was going to blow past the axe's handle as it was leaning from the blow, but then, as my staff slid on the handle, the hatchet’s head caught it. And he punched me with his buckler. And I fell over, he raised his axe, and was about to finish me off, but then I shifted my hand, and the dirt below him moved, tripping him, and I pulled out my knife, rolled over, and stabbed him while we were both on the ground.

I then looked around, and it looked like Sid had finished off her opponent, but she had some minor wounds too. But we had to get going if we wanted to get the dragon's blessing, so we kept walking till we made it to the land of fire.
