Chapter 3: Shogun awakening

Tokyo, Japan. Inside the headquarters of the Second Squad, the upper command floors carried a disciplined quiet that felt heavier than ordinary silence.

The building stood in the heart of the city, surrounded by endless movement and neon light, yet inside these reinforced walls, time felt slower, more controlled, as if history itself was being monitored from within.

Soft white ceiling lights reflected across polished black floors, while digital panels embedded into the walls displayed encrypted data streams and anomaly tracking reports.

The faint hum of servers blended with distant city noise leaking through insulated glass, creating an atmosphere that balanced modern technology with something far older and more serious.

Inside the command chamber, a large digital table projected rotating historical records and classified documents, their light casting shifting shadows across the room.

The commander stood at the far end of the table, his posture straight, his expression unreadable. Across from him stood Doan, an agent of the Second Squad, his hands resting calmly behind his back, his attention fully focused forward.

"Look at this file, Doan," the commander said, sliding a sealed black folder across the illuminated surface.

Doan stepped forward, accepting it with both hands before opening it carefully. The title printed across the first page immediately caught his attention.

  Devil 00009, Shogun.

His eyes moved across the text, his expression remaining controlled even as the information grew heavier with each line.

Inside the file, historical documentation described an anomaly first recorded shortly after the Battle of Sekigahara.

The entity had been given the classification Shogun due to its physical manifestation, which resembled traditional samurai armor surrounded by an unseen presence described in early records as thousands of soldiers standing in silent formation.

The file detailed that every sixty years, the anomaly awakened. Each awakening period had historically been followed by large scale calamities across Japan, with natural disasters intensifying beyond predictable patterns.

Historical comparisons suggested that every major catastrophic natural event recorded since the early seventeenth century had been linked, directly or indirectly, to the Shogun anomaly’s activity cycle.

The commander spoke again, his voice calm, though the weight behind it made the room feel colder.

  Stolen story; please report.

"Search for suitable individuals who will be a great help in sealing this anomaly. If we fail to seal it within one week, a large scale calamity will erupt."

Doan closed the file slowly, processing the scale of the task ahead. He gave a respectful bow, acknowledging both the order and the responsibility attached to it.

Without speaking further, he turned and walked toward the exit, the soft sound of his footsteps fading into the controlled silence of the command floor.

Behind him, the digital table shifted displays automatically, showing an ancient battlefield reconstruction layered over modern satellite imaging, quietly reminding anyone who saw it that some wars never truly ended.

Frankfurt, Germany. Inside the headquarters of the Fifth Squad, the lower operational levels carried a colder atmosphere than the upper floors.

Fluorescent ceiling lights reflected across dark reinforced flooring, while distant machinery created a constant mechanical hum that vibrated faintly through the walls.

The deeper one moved into the facility, the more the building felt less like a headquarters and more like a controlled machine built for war against things the public would never understand.

Reistu stood inside a secured briefing corridor, his posture relaxed but alert, his mind already shifting away from the rooftop and back into the world he had once belonged to.

The emotional warmth from earlier still lingered somewhere deep inside him, but experience had already begun sealing it away behind discipline.

"So, tell me everything," Reistu said, his voice steady and direct.

Erick stood beside him for a moment before giving a small respectful nod. "My job is done. Dr. Kimich will explain everything from here."

Without waiting for a response, Erick stepped back and left the corridor, his footsteps fading quickly into the background noise of the facility.

Moments later, a woman approached from the opposite hallway. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Niean," she said calmly.

Dr. Kimich wore a clean white medical coat over a dark professional uniform, her movements precise and controlled.

Her expression was neutral, not cold, not warm, simply focused, like someone who had long accepted the nature of the work she was part of.

"I will explain everything. Please come with me."

Reistu gave a small nod and followed her through a series of secured doors and biometric checkpoints before entering a research briefing room filled with medical monitors and data projection screens. Without wasting time, she activated a video file.

The recording showed a secured testing area where several death row criminals stood in restrained formation, each wearing heavy metallic collars around their necks.

Armed guards stood along the perimeter while a female researcher spoke to them from behind reinforced glass, explaining that their task was simple.

They were to enter a designated zone and return. She warned them not to attempt escape and referenced the collars as enforcement.

  A command was issued remotely.

The collar activated instantly, and the demonstration left no doubt about its purpose. One of the criminal was killed and his head was cut off from his body.

The remaining prisoners stood frozen in place, fully aware of the consequences. The researcher continued speaking, using the demonstration as proof of compliance enforcement before explaining that this was what would happen to anyone who attempted to escape assigned orders.

  The video ended.

Reistu remained silent for a moment, his jaw tightening slightly."What was that… How cruel."

Dr. Kimich adjusted the tablet in her hands, her voice calm and analytical rather than defensive.

She explained that the individuals had already been sentenced to death and that ORDER used them to gather high risk field data that normal agents could not safely obtain.

She spoke of it as statistical necessity rather than moral choice. She then shifted the conversation toward the main objective.

She explained that the criminals had been deployed to the activity site of Devil 0019, classified as The Necromancer. According to gathered field data, the anomaly did not rely on direct combat strength but instead controlled living humans as defensive barriers.

She stated that the anomaly itself appeared physically fragile, but its control over victims made standard assault operations extremely dangerous.

She explained that its classification was currently listed as Class B, meaning it was considered moderately dangerous but highly unpredictable and required capture rather than destruction.

She then brought up a digital map projection. "The anomaly is currently active in Madrid, Spain. You have three days to prepare. The task force is waiting for you, Mr. Niean."

The room fell silent after her words, the faint hum of research equipment filling the space as the reality of the mission settled fully into place.
