Thirty-Five

Having handcuffs slapped on my wrists was not on my bingo card when laying in a hospital bed on my first day in Sinnoh. After Officer Jenny arrived which this Jenny just so happened to be a bit shorter than I recall the two I've met in Oldale and Petalburg. Though that could just be me trying to find something to be different between the women that are practically clones and you'll convince me otherwise. Why did I have these handcuffs? Supposedly there is an ordinance that states massive Pokémon like Tyranitar can't be out on the beach so close to the city in the off chance that it could cause a panic. Which okay that sounds reasonable. However, I highly doubt there would just be random ass wild Tyranitar on the beach so close to town if it wasn't under a trainer's care and was under some form of control.

When that logic was brought up Jenny just looked at me like I was stupid. It just goes to show that my logic doesn't fit 1 to 1 here. Also, apparently the Rhyperior that got its ass handed to it by Tyranitar belongs to the father of Vivi. One would think well the punches would end here and there would be no more surprises, right? Wrong. Apparently using Hyper Beam so close to the city is also something heavily frowned upon. Which that is also understandable but was that on my mind when some rando just up and attacked without warning? Nope. Survive encounter with whatever the fuck shot a rock at Mach fuck you. Found out that Tyranitar took a Rock Wrecker to the chest. The shard of rock that went through my calf was a piece of said attack. Which is why according to Officer Jenny Thomas is also in cuffs at the station being questioned like I am now.

It was rather awkward to have to tell them about my day. Meaning, I had to tell them I got ice cream with Cynthia, she got called away for work and when wondering the city with my Umbreon, which is currently in her ball on a desk out of my reach. Met a kid and her Feebas. I let out my Tyranitar who loves kids to play. Which I have photographic evidence of them building a sandcastle. I was given my phone so I could unlock it and show said photos. Which Jenny seemed to hold back a audible reaction but did smile at them.

"So, you were watching them play when something caught your Tyranitar's attention?"

"Yes." I nodded in agreement and looked down at my appropriately wrapped leg. Joy and little to say about my attempt at field medical care on myself. She leveled me with a scowl that could have rivaled a agitated mom look. Then again she did look quite a bit older than the other Joy I'd seen. "I think how quickly she stood up mixed with the fact the speed at which she started moving? I am not sure but something screamed something was wrong and I just reacted with my gut. I moved and pushed Vivi down and back."

"And you were unaware of what exactly cause your injury at that moment?" Jenny asked taking notes on a pad of paper she had pulled out of a pocket. I shook my head and she continued speaking. "I see... So I can assume that you believe your Tyranitar acted of her own accord to protect you and Vivi form any perceived harm."

"That is a correct assumption. Though I do want to iterate that I don't give my Pokémon direct commands nor was I personally capable of doing so at that time even if I had wanted to. I let them follow their own way of fighting." I shift my shoulders a bit uncomfortable because my leg itches and I have to resist the urge to scratch at it.

"Right, that has been noted. What happened next?"

I explained the best I could, I could barely remember much afterwards. The blood loss mixed with the shock? I didn't have any information on where the Rhyperior had come from nor who it could have belonged to if anyone. The only thing I knew was that Tyranitar was kicking its ass from what I could tell. I had to get away from the immediate area so she could fight off the Pokémon wild or not. Something of that size being near when they fought had odds of being crushed I was not comfortable with.

"She is quite a huge member of her species and is rather old from what Joy said when she was looked over. She will make a full recovery and so will the Rhyperior."

"I had no doubt that Tyranitar would be fine. She's no push over and she was protecting me and a kid... I'm surprised the Rhyperior will even recover if I'm honest. The wrath of a motherly Pokémon is something terrifying. I suppose Rhyperior is one of the few Pokémon to be able to recover from that kind of beat down at least not without a permanent injury."

Jenny nodded in agreement. Writing down a few more things on her note pad.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

"So, what kind of trouble am I in for Tyranitar defending herself? Cause I doubt I was actually the target of this and I highly doubt that Vivi was the target either." I raise my wrists letting the cuffs chains raddle a bit. "Considering that I still have these on I'm being charged with something?"

"Well, it wasn't really your fault for this but I have to be unfair in this case. The point is your Tyranitar did in fact use a Hyper Beam in a spot that technically counts as within city limits. Secondly you had a Tyranitar out of their ball in city limits which is also not completely legal even if she was completely calm. The reason being you don't have the badges to prove you are competent enough to be considered as in control of a Pokémon as strong as a Tyranitar."

I work my jaw slowly nodding my head. "So what? I pay a fine or something like that? I doubt you're actually throwing the book at me considering the circumstances of this. The idea that everyone puts so much on little bits of metal to say that I have the ability to take care for or keep my Pokémon calm. I basically came here to vacation a bit maybe get a badge or two if my Pokémon decide they even want to battle. I'm pretty sure I only have one confirmed battler in my Mightyena and possibly Tyranitar but throwing her out in a Gym battle feels like I'd be bullying them and it wouldn't be fair to Tyranitar to fight when she shouldn't have to if she doesn't want to." I huff letting my head fall back.

Jenny is quiet for a few moments before she shifts in her seat. She seemed a bit uncomfortable but I couldn't really understand the reasoning behind it.

"Yes, that is something that individuals associated with the League as you are tend to not need to do. However, you are in Sinnoh right now and not your employed region of Hoenn." I opened my mouth but Jenny rose a hand to stop me continuing to speak. "I don't know the exact details of your involvement with the Hoenn branch of the Pokémon League, but as a Pokémon behavioral specialist pertaining to specific types of Pokémon and subjects of abuse? I don't even have clearance to look deeper than just your job title and your current list of Pokémon and any markers pertaining to your Pokémon specifically and even that data is partially redacted."

I raised an eyebrow. I had assumed Steven had buffed up the security to access anything involving me but damn. So much so that even certain things involving my own Pokémon are redacted or restricted? I know that I'm getting paid quite a bit even if I wasn't paying very close attention to that fact. I only registered about six zeros before I just kind of pretended that I didn't see it but maybe I should actually pay more attention and maybe ask a few more important questions the next time I talk to Steven.

"Ahem," I looked up from where my gaze had dropped to my hands back up to Jenny who had cleared her throat. "The fact your position is so important makes it extremely difficult for me to even consider fully arresting you. In reality you're only being detained until we have the whole story. I'm going to have to let you go with just a warning considering from all the testimony I have confirms you and your Pokémon weren't the aggressors. The cuffs are procedure, considering you are from another region. It's a regulation that's been around since before I was even born." I blinked at that and my look of confusion made Jenny sigh. "I would have taken them off already, but I don't have that authority. It's an old law that unfortunately has been in effect since before the League started the process of putting everyone under one banner so to speak. The same thing would have happened if you were in any region other than Hoenn."

I frowned and hummed thinking about what she said more deeply. "Would that law have a specific rule that if someone were to attempt to enter the region, they are only allowed to bring a specific number of Pokémon with them from their home region if they are seen somewhat as a notable figure like for example a top 8 contender in their home League?"

Jenny actually looked a bit surprised but nodded her head. "Yes, as you are associated with the League it softens the restrictions which is why your team wasn't limited but normally trainers of any type are and can be deployed as military force for their region. They can be and are in most cases seen as assets to deter conflict such as war between regions. This is why several foreign trainers are allowed to join the gym challenges and League Championships not of their own regions. It is a replacement for a lot of the bloodshed of the past, to push trainers to compete instead of things that happened to you today."

That made a concerning amount of sense. Each trainer technically had a duty to defend their home in emergency, when necessary. Be it from invasion or even any unruly Pokémon. Each active trainer was technically a standing militia having anywhere from 1 to 6 active combatants with the trainer being the commander of those soldiers... shock troops inside one another's regions that acts like a deterrent to war because of the damage they would cause to one another. Well fuck, I really need to think harder about the League and can't let myself fall into the illusion that this place doesn't have just prejudice issues but the fact they keep themselves in check with their system that is actually effective. Even if it had Naruto Chunin exam vibes where they actively display their military strength in differing regions the upper people in the different regions to dissuade war and the normal people are entertained by it and thus fund it by buying tickets to watch those battles up close.

  "Holy shit."
